Sundance Film Festival to premiere 70 films on custom online platform

The Sundance Film Festival is to go mostly virtual for 2021 – premiering more than 70 films on a custom online platform.

Festival director Tabitha Jackson announced on Wednesday (December 2, 2020) that next year’s festival – taking place between January 28th and February 3rd, (2021) – has been arranged to take place amid the coronavirus pandemic.

And while there will be some socially distanced screenings around the U.S., the majority of the festival, which usually takes place in Park City, Utah, will take place online during the seven-day event. In addition to films being screened, virtual Q&A sessions will be held with the cast and crew of some of the movies.

“(This) gives us the opportunity to reach new audiences, safely, where they are,” she said. “At the heart of all this is a belief in the power of coming together, and the desire to preserve what makes a festival unique – a collaborative spirit, a collective energy, and a celebration of the art, artists, and ideas that leave us changed.”

The line-up for the festival will be announced in the coming weeks. Tickets will go on sale on January 7, 2021.

Since it was founded in 1978 by Robert Redford, John Earle, and Sterling Van Wagenen, the Sundance Film Festival has remained one of the foremost events of the movie calendar.
