The 33 leads nominees for 2016 Imagen Awards

Antonio Banderas’ Chilean miner movie The 33 looks set to dominate the 2016 Imagen Awards after landing nine nominations.
The real-life movie follows the 33 Chilean miners who were trapped underground for 69 days in 2010 following a tunnel collapse at a site near San Jose.
The film received mixed reviews from critics and a lukewarm reception at the box office upon its release last year (15), falling just short of recovering its $26 million (£19.8 million) budget.
However, it has proven to be a hit with Imagen Awards bosses after earning top nods for the 31st annual ceremony, which celebrates positive portrayals of Latinos and Latin culture onscreen.
The 33 is just one of two films up for Best Picture, competing against drama Kidnap Capital, about a group of illegal immigrants held hostage in Arizona. The moviemakers, Patricia Riggen and Felipe Rodriguez, will battle for Best Director for their respective films.
Spanish actor Antonio, who plays the Chilean miners’ unofficial leader, and his co-star Mario Casas are both shortlisted for Best Actor – Feature Film, alongside Ryan Guzman for Beyond Paradise.
In the female category, The 33’s Juliette Binoche will face off against Morena Baccarin for Deadpool, and Beyond Paradise’s Francia Raisa.
There were also four supporting actor nods for the cast of The 33 – Lou Diamond Phillips, Rodrigo Santoro, Cote de Pablo, and Kate del Castillo.
Meanwhile, in the TV categories, Jennifer Lopez’s cop show Shades of Blue, and The Fosters, which she executive produces, are both nominated for Best Primetime Television Program – Drama, alongside the likes of Castle, American Crime, and Switched at Birth.
Jane The Virgin, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Modern Family, Young & Hungry, and the cancelled Telenovela are in the running for Best Primetime Television Program – Comedy, with Eva Longoria (Telenovela), Jennifer Lopez (Shades of Blue), America Ferrera (Superstore), Gina Rodriguez (Jane The Virgin), and Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) among the competitors for Best Actress – Television.
Other nominees include Gael Garcia Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle), Wagner Moura and Pedro Pascal for Pablo Escobar drug drama Narcos, and Oscar Isaac (Show Me a Hero), who will all fight for Best Actor – Television, and Jaime Camil (Jane the Virgin), Rico Rodriguez (Modern Family), and Alex Meneses, (Telenovela), who have each earned supporting nods.
The winners will be announced during a ceremony at the Beverly Hilton in California on 9 September (16).
