The Art of Telling | 2009
Shot over a two-year period, we follow the people in a shanty town in Alexandria called Mafrouza, built on the site and remains of a Greco-Roman necropolis. A grocer and sheik, Mohamed Khattab, runs a local market and preaches the Friday sermon at the local mosque. During the holiday period leading up to Eid, the Muslim Brothers arrive and seize the mosque. The people of Mafrouza respond to the takeover calmly. Initially, Mohamed Khattab keeps his intentions quiet, but this does not mean he has given up. Mohamed Khattab eventually vents his anger and opposition as well as expresses his bond with the film crew, now due to leave, after two years in the area.
