Synopsis

40,000 international volunteers signed on to fight against Franco, Hitler and Mussolini in the Spanish Civil War. Of this fighting force, 3200 were Americans who were sent to Spain to combat the rise of Fascism. Fighting to uphold firmly held ideals, five years before the United States entered World War II, these volunteers were considered by many to be "the conscience of the thirties."
