The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part tops North American box office

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part has triumphed over the North American box office in its opening weekend (09-10Feb19).
The film, which stars Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, and Will Arnett, has earned $34.4 million (£26.6 million) to top the other movies, but the total is far less than the at least $50 million (£38.6 million) industry experts expected it to gross. The earnings also fall well behind the film’s predecessor The Lego Movie, which grossed $69 million (£53.3 million) in its opening weekend in 2014.
Taraji P. Henson’s What Men Want comes in at number two with $19 million (£14.7 million), while Liam Neeson’s Cold Pursuit is third with $10.9 million (£8.4 million). The release of the film comes after the Taken actor sparked backlash following a recent interview in which he recalled a time he became a vigilante seeking vengeance like his character in the movie. He told the Independent newspaper that 40 years ago, after a late friend told him she had been raped by a black man, he spent a week roaming the streets hoping “some black b***ard would come out of a pub and have a go at me about something, you know? So that I could… kill him.”
Neeson has since apologised and insists he is not racist.
Meanwhile, Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston’s The Upside and Glass, which stars James McAvoy, Samuel L. Jackson, and Bruce Willis, round out the top five with $7.2 million (£5.6 million) and $6.4 million (£5 million), respectively.
