The Newest ‘Cloverfield’ Movie Is Called ‘God Particle’ And It Takes Place In Space

We’ve been anxiously awaiting the next Cloverfield film after 10 Cloverfield Lane changed the way we see John Goodman forever. Finally, the third movie in the J.J. Abrams-produced series has been confirmed — God Particle.

We speculated that God Particle was part of the Cloverfield world when it was announced in February, but we’ve finally gotten confirmation. The flick sounds like it’s going to take place in space. It will follow a team of astronauts who make a “shocking discovery” and end up fighting for survival in some sort of altered reality. If it’s anything like the other Cloverfield films, it’s going to have a massive twist and fill us up with anxiety for the entirety of the movie.

The script was penned by Oren Uziel and directed by Julis Onah. It stars David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Bruhl and Chris O’Dowd.

Cloverfield fans have a lot to look forward to in the future. God Particle will not be the last film in the series — in fact, there’s going to be a whole lot more. Both J.J. Abrams and his studio partner Paramount Pictures are in the process of developing more movies within the shared Cloverfield universe. Both parties are hoping to release one new Cloverfield film a year (which in our opinion is still not enough).

Tackling a shared universe is a difficult task. Marvel and D.C. Comics seem to do a fairly interesting, detailed job, but on the other hand, the Star Wars franchise gets a lot of flack for changing aspects of the universe beyond the original trilogy. Jar Jar Binks anyone? Luke Skywalker suddenly has a daughter? If you mess with a world people love, you’re bound to face criticism, but if subsequent Cloverfield films are anything like 10 Cloverfield Lane (which we’d argue is even more thrilling than the original), we’re happy to see where this world takes us.

God Particle will hit theaters on Feb. 24, 2017.
