The Public Enemy | 1930
Tom Powers and Matt Doyle are teenage hoodlums who become gangsters in 1920s Chicago, much to the dismay of their law-abiding families. Tom and Matt's gang go into bootlegging during Prohibition and, as their heady lifestyle flourishes, Tom's ruthlessness leads him to rise to a position of great power. Tom remains loyal to his family, but his attempts to help his widowed mother with his financial success create conflict with his older brother, a WWI veteran who rejects Tom's immorality. Tom's escalating greed and recklessness cause a gang war and eventually prove to be his undoing.
