The Rose to rise

The remains of Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre, which figured prominently in the hit movie Shakespeare in Love have proved to be “in a reasonable condition” and additional funds have been allocated for a preliminary excavation, the BBC reported on Sunday.

Baroness Tessa Blackstone, Minister for the Arts, told the BBC, “The results could lead to important light being shed on the history of Elizabethan theater, one of Britain’s greatest contributions to world culture.”

Two years ago Judi Dench, who played Queen Elizabeth I in the film, said that she had acquired the replica of the Rose Theater that was constructed for the movie at Shepperton Studios in the hope of turning it into an actual working Shakespearian theater.
