New Trailer for ‘Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ Gives a Peek at Supporting Cast

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty20th Century Fox

Ben Stiller‘s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a film adapted from James Thurber’s 1939 short story, just released a new trailer today. The first trailer primarily established how plain and boring Walter Mitty’s life was, while here we get to see the adventures he’ll have and the other characters surrounding him, who thankfully are bright and awake enough to counter the almost comatose performance Stiller is giving here. The supporting cast includes Kristen Wiig as the object of Stiller’s affections, Patton Oswalt as an online dating rep who continues to assist Stiller with his customer service requests as he adventures, Adam Scott as a cartoonishly unsympathetic boss, Kathryn Hahn and Shirley MacLaine as his sister and mother, and Sean Penn as the rugged adventurer who spurs Walter through his transformation from mild everyman to world traveler.

Reviews for the film (which screened at the New York Film Festival last week) have been mixed, which, like other Christmas Day feel-good movies like We Bought a Zoo, pretty much nixes its Oscar chances. But this new trailer features beautiful photography, stunning natural vistas, and a soundtrack of inspirational pop music that gives the feeling that this film might be a hit… and might be a little bit like a two hour commercial for life (as well as LIFE). There’s no way to tell exactly how much of the footage is Walter’s daydreams versus reality, but the reverant tone alone separates this remake from the 1947 version, which was a lighthearted musical rather than a look at what it means to be alive. Check out the trailer below.
