The Square dominates European Film Awards

Dark comedy The Square was the toast of the European Film Awards on Saturday (09Dec17) after dominating the competition with six top honours.
The art world parody, which landed the coveted Palme d’Or prize at this year’s (17) Cannes Film Festival in France, was named Best European Film, while Swedish filmmaker Ruben Ostlund earned both the Director and Screenwriter prizes.
Leading man Claes Bang took home the Actor accolade, and The Square – Sweden’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film – was also awarded the Comedy title, as Josefin Asberg collected his previously-announced Production Designer gong at the ceremony in Berlin, Germany.
Best Actress went to Alexandra Borbely for Hungary’s Oscar contender On Body and Soul.
Loving Vincent won Animated Feature, while Communion scored the Documentary trophy, and British director William Oldroyd took home the Discovery Award for his thriller Lady Macbeth.
The Achievement in World Cinema honour was presented to actress Julie Delpy, and Russian filmmaker Aleksandr Sokurov was recognised for his career with the EFA Lifetime Achievement Award.
