Growing up, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was one of my favorite films. With the iconic Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka in a gigantic building full of treats and adorable oompa loompas, what wasn’t there to love? However, it looks like there may have been something else lurking beneath the overall plot in the iconic film. Reddit user jacobym1 suggests that Charlie may have dreamed up the entire thing.

Jacobym1 says that if you notice around the 29-minute mark of the film, the television is on and the newscaster announces that the fifth golden ticket has been found just as Charlie is falling asleep. As he drifts off, his grandpa says, “Let him sleep. Let him have one last dream.” Jacobym1 goes on to say that the remainder of the film is actually Charlie’s dream since, according to the newscaster’s announcement, there is no chance of him winning the contest that could have changed his life for the better.

Think about it, Charlie’s life is very sad. His family is extremely impoverished with little food to eat. He doesn’t have any money to purchase a chocolate bar until he randomly finds some money out on the street. The regular Wonka Bar that Charlie can just barely afford just happens to have a golden ticket in it. On the other hand, the kids who do win the contest are spoiled and entitled, these kids get everything handed to them, including their golden tickets.

From that moment forward, everything is pretty much perfect for Charlie, not only is his formally bedridden Grandpa able to jump up and dance around, but all of the amazing things inside of the factory are specifically tailored for Charlie and not for obnoxious rich kids. Jacobym1 gives examples saying

  • There is a piece of gum that is a four-course meal. (Perfect for a poor family)
  • Candy that literally lasts forever. (Once again, if you are hungry this is your main concern.)
  • Repeated confirmations of how bad the other kids are.
  • Rather than a lifetime supply of chocolate – not that useful for a poor family – he actually gets the whole factory – food, shelter and wealth for his family.
  • Everything in the factory is of a dreamlike quality.

So what do you guys think? Was Willy Wonka and his Chocolate Factory all in Charlie’s head?
