“Tigerland” Premiere

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 3, 2000 — In 1971, the United States was in the middle of the Vietnam War and thousands of young Americans were being sent over to fight for a cause they weren’t too sure about. It was a time when not everyone wanted to be a soldier, even the soldiers.

In director Joel Schumacher’s latest — and what some are calling his best — film, “Tigerland,” he captures the feelings and attitudes of these young men who had no choice but to fight.

Tuesday night at the 20th Century Fox Studios, stars such as Katie Holmes, Christina Ricci, Jake Busey, David Alan Grier, Vin Diesel, Jennifer Grey, Judd Nelson and Jeremy Jackson came to see Schumacher’s unknown cast chew up the scenery.

“This is not a war movie; it’s about the young men it affected,” said Schumacher.

Shot in just 28 days on a limited budget, the actors were striped of all luxuries.

“We didn’t have makeup, trailers or chairs to sit in. We did our own stunts and trained like soldiers,” said star Matthew Davis.

“I wanted it to be as real as it could be for them,” added Schumacher.

Even though the movie is not about fighting itself but about the training before battle, people came out of the film saying it was the best war movie they’d ever seen. One person was heard to say, “I felt like I went through it with them.”

“Tigerland” opens in theaters Oct. 6.
