Tom Cruise May Join ‘Rock of Ages’ Movie

Tom CruiseWell, this is one way to reboot your career. Word has it Tom Cruise is being approached to take on a role in the big-screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Rock of Ages. After his insane, couch-jumping stunts and numerous publicized glimpses into his religious beliefs, Cruise had kind of a rough time getting back into the game. I, for one, have a hard time taking him seriously in anything anymore, and the meager U.S. profits for his last film with Cameron Diaz, Knight and Day, suggest that it’s not just me.

The closest Tom’s been to singing in a film is blurting out drunken tunes back in Top Gun, but perhaps his performance in Tropic Thunder served as a sort of follow-up audition for the soon-to-be musical film. In case you missed it, he attempted to show us his down-to-earth, funny side when he made a cameo appearance as Les Grossman in the 2008 action-comedy, bumping and grinding to Ludacris’ “Get Back” and reprising the role again for the MTV movie awards (which led to Paramount and MTV Films optioning a feature-length spin-off for the character), but it seems that his reputation can’t be undone.

That being said, I’m probably not the only one who’d be willing to pay to see a movie just to see him play a bartender rocking out and singing 80s hair band hits a la Cocktail (The dude’s just more fun to watch when he’s not taking himself so seriously.) Adam Shankman will direct the adaptation for Warner Bros. Pictures. There’s no word yet on whether or not Tommy boy will say yes, but I sure hope he does. I’ll admit, as much as I loved the first Mission Impossible, I’m not that excited for the next Ethan Hunt escapade, but a musical? That could be fun.
