After delivering the sounds for our movie of the year and grabbing a Golden Globe nomination for it, Trent Reznor will continue scoring films with longtime songwriting partner Atticus Ross. The Nine Inch Nails frontman revealed in an interview with the New York Times’ “Times Talk” series that he’ll score the American film adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s bestselling book, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, also being directed by The Social Network‘s David Fincher. Reznor has already started on the project. He’s been recording for the past month and has already submitted two hours of music to Fincher, which he’s using in early cuts of the film.
“We started recording things in a different way, that was all based on performance, nothing programmed,” Reznor said. “And that would be my limited skills at stringed instruments. We process it in a way that gives it a really interesting, organic, layered feel. It felt like something we’ve never done before.”
Considering that Reznor is the mastermind of some of the best music of the past 20 years, hearing the words “never done before” are, well, exciting. Plus, think about it: if the Reznor/Ross duo can take a film about the creation of a website and make it more intense than The Expendables, imagine what they can do with a film that will be legitimately intense on its own, featuring a hacker-punk heroine with a big-ass dragon tattoo on her back, dyed hair and a whole bunch of piercings.
