Raja Gosnell’s big-screen treatment of classic cartoon series The Smurfs has an eclectic all-star cast that continues to grow as pre-production continues.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Hank Azaria will voice Gargamel, the evil sorcerer and arch-nemesis of the Smurfs. In addition, Jayma Mays (Fox’s Glee) will play the pregnant wife of star Neil Patrick Harris in Sony’s CGI/live-action hybrid film. Previous cast members announced include George Lopez, Alan Cumming and Katy Perry

Azaria is already a voice-over legend, thanks to his long-term employment on The Simpsons as Apu the Kwik-E-Mart owner, Moe the Bartender. The producer’s have focused on hiring actors, like Lopez, Azaria and Cumming, who’ve had experience lending their voices to animated characters (All have at least two VO credits to their resume).

The story of the movie centers on the happy expectant couple’s lives being turned upside-down upon meeting these blue creatures.

The movie will take place in New York City’s Central Park and is set to begin production next month for a July 29th, 2011 release
