‘Unforgiven’ Adaptation Being Developed For Angelina Jolie

Jessica AlbaIt looks like Angelina Jolie is really making the most of her recent Salt-driven publicity: Deadline reports that The Usual Suspects scribe Christopher McQuarrie is scripting a feature adaptation of the 2009 British miniseries Unforgiven with Jolie in mind for the lead, just days after we learned that the actress would also be writing and directing a Bosnian War-set love story.  Both projects are being developed and produced under Graham King’s GK Films.

Unforgiven’s drama centers on a woman’s attempts to rejoin society after serving 15 years in prison for the murder of two policemen who came to evict her and her family from their farmhouse.  Although she hopes to live quietly and reunite with her troubled younger sister, the paroled woman is hunted down by the two sons of one of her victims.  British television actress Suranne Jones played the lead in the original series.

While that storyline leads me to believe that Angie’s role won’t break the mold of the hundred other ‘hot but tough’ characters she’s played over the years, isn’t that Tomb Raider shtick the reason we keep paying to see Jolie in theaters?  Throw a bit of that Charlize Theron-in-Monster makeup on her (she looks too good for us to believe she’s been locked up for 15 years) and this could easily be another knock-out role for the Salt star.

Although Jolie won’t commit to Unforgiven until she gets a look at the final script, Deadline reports that the project has already been fast-tracked by GK after the success of Jolie’s Salt this summer, a film that has grossed over $217 million worldwide and has reignited interest in the perpetual tabloid celebrity.
