After spending six seasons perfecting the lovable biyotch Blair Waldorf on Gossip GirlLeighton Meester will not be reprising her role as mean girl Carrie Bishop in the Veronica Mars film.

The television show’s creator and film director Rob Thomas recently announced that Meester’s character will instead return as musician Andrea Estella, lead singer of Twin Sister, whose songs will be featured in the film. The creator is a fan of the indie pop band and often was inspired by their song “I Want a House” while writing the script for the movie. The Gossip Girl alum, who played Carrie for two episodes during the first season of the series, is “unavailable” to appear in the movie as she is filming “a different movie during the same time frame on the wrong coast,” announced Thomas in an email to Kickstarter backers.

“One of the reasons I wanted Leighton, beyond her talent/beauty/history in the show, was that we needed a performer who could sing in this important role,” Thomas explained. “Once it became evident that we couldn’t make Leighton’s schedule work, I decided to cast someone from a band I already wanted in the movie.” Fortunately, he also added that Estella “has an amazing voice; I can’t get enough of it.”

Since the film’s Kickstarter campaign wrapped in April with a total of $5.7 million (well above the $2 million goal), Kristen Bell has been joined by returning actors Jason DohringPercy Daggs III, Chris Lowell, Tina Majorino, Ryan Hansen, Ken Marino, and Enrico ColantoniJustin Long and Gaby Hoffmann will also have cameos in the long awaited film, scheduled for release in 2014, seven years after the UPN/CW series ended. We know Estella can sing, but are her acting chops up to par with these talented actors? Watch her perform here while we await her film debut.
