Sara Bareilles and ‘Pippin’ Producers Will Turn Keri Russell’s ‘Waitress’ into a Broadway Musical

Although we’re still holding out for a three-act opera based on Felicity, we’ll take this news as the next best thing. As Hollywood.com learned backstage at the Tony Awards on Sunday night, the Broadway stage is gearing up for a new musical adaptation of the 2007 romantic dramedy Waitress. The Keri Russell starrer will be transformed for the Great White Way under the direction of Pippin‘s Diane Paulus (who raked in the awards Sunday night), with producers from the award-winning play, Barry and Fran Weissler, backing the new project.

But perhaps the most exciting element of the new project: recording artist Sara Bareilles is pioneering an attempt at stage scoring by writing the music for the Waitress adaptation. The small but endearing story follows Russell’s small town waitress in pursuit of an unlikely romance with a neighborhood newcomer, and seems perfectly suited for a perky, sentimental Broadway production.
