It’s Oscar season and Netflix is certainly trying to not go noticed.
The film premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival when many films go up for bids to get larger distribution. Despite critics raving about the film, it didn’t sell right away, not until the last hours of the festival when Netflix scooped it up. Now currently rated 95% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, the film will be premiering on Netflix.
The film follows two families which have men who are returning home from World War II to rural Mississippi. The McAllan family with Henry (Jason Clarke), Laura (Carey Mulligan), and Pappy (Jonathan Banks) are struggling with their failing farm and the Jacksons (Mary J Blige and Rob Morgan) are still struggling with their dream home. When Jamie (Garrett Hedlund) return to the McAllan’s and Ronsel (Jason Mitchell) return to the Jacksons, they find that things haven’t changed at all and they still have to deal with poverty and racism.
