Jennifer Lawrence is the new front runner for the female lead in David O. Russell’s The Silver Linings Playbook. Lawrence has beaten out seemingly every other young actress in Hollywood for the part; other actresses being considered included Elizabeth Banks, Rachel McAdams, and Olivia Wilde.
The Silver Linings Playbook also stars Mark Wahlberg, as a former schoolteacher who is returns home after four years in a mental institution. He becomes friends with his neighbor (Lawrence’s role), a young widow who suffers from depression.
Lawrence is already an Oscar nominee at age 20 (making the rest of us look bad) for her performance in the harrowing drama Winter’s Bone, and was last seen as Mystique in X Men: First Class. Lawrence also won out the coveted lead role of Katniss in Gary Ross’s adaptation of The Hunger Games. So far, the descriptions of the project make her role seem like standard Manic Pixie Dream Girl nonsense, but Lawrence certainly deserves better.
Russell, who directed Oscar-winning film The Fighter last year, is also rumored to be involved in historical thriller The Mission, and the dark Disney take on Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent. I vote that he combines them all into a single project about an evil witch who suffers from mental illness and goes on a covert ops mission in Columbia with Jennifer Lawrence. I’d watch that.
