Wild Tales dominates at second annual Platino awards

Argentinian filmmaker DAMIAN SZIFRON’s WILD TALES dominated the Premios Platino of Iberoamerican Cinema awards on Saturday (18Jul15), landing eight top prizes.
The film, also known as Relatos Salvajes, earned eight of the 10 titles it was nominated for, including Best Director, Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Actress for Erica Rivas, and Best Original Music for Gustavo Santaolalla.
But Wild Tales’ leading male, Leonardo Sbaraglia, lost out on the Best Actor award to Oscar Jaenada for his performance in Mexican comedy Cantinflas, a biopic of funnyman Mario Moreno.
Marshland was a triple winner, taking home Best Cinematography for Alex Catalan, and the Audience Awards for Best Picture and Best Actor for Javier Gutierrez, while La Isla Minima scored just one of the nine honours it was shortlisted for, claiming Best Photography.
Best Documentary went to Wim Wenders and Julio Salagado Ribeiro’s The Salt of the Earth, while The Boy and the World was awarded Best Animation, and The Longest Distance won director Claudia Pinto the Best First Fiction Feature title.
Meanwhile, Antonio Banderas received the Honorary Platino Award in recognition of his lifetime achievement in cinema, and he used his acceptance speech at the second annual ceremony in Marbella, Spain to encourage his fellow Latin stars to unite to further their progress in Hollywood.
He said, “Though we all love our countries of origin, we can embrace the idea and pride of being Latinos, and vindicate our language in productions. Nobody will help us if we don’t help ourselves.”
