Every once in a while in the wild world of casting rumors, we hit on some speculation we really would like to be true. This is one of those occasions. According to Superherohype.com, director Guy Ritchie is hoping to sign professional badass Daniel Day-Lewis as Sherlock Holmes‘ ultimate nemesis, Professor Moriarty.
The role of Moriarty has been subject to speculation before; shortly before the release of the first film, rumors flew that Brad Pitt would cameo as the nefarious Professor.
The news is no more than rumor at this point, but we think Day-Lewis would be ideal for the role. That man can pull off controlled menace with his hands tied behind his back, and has more than enough acting chops to hold his own with Robert Downey Jr.
With or without Lewis, filming starts this summer for Sherlock Holmes 2. The film is due out in December 2011.
