ALTStellan Skarsgard is in talks to join David Fincher’s adaptation of crime thriller The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The Swedish actor would play Martin Vanger, a member of the illustrious family around which the film revolves, and one of the prime suspects in the disappearance of Harriet Vanger. Skarsgard joins Daniel Craig as journalist-turned-private investigator Mikael Blomkvist. The lead female role of troubled hacker Lisbeth Salander is still up for grabs, though Sony has reportedly narrowed it down to four actresses, all relative unknowns.

Since director David Fincher announced his intention to keep his adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s popular series of crime novels in Sweden, we’ve been waiting to hear if he’d assemble a Swedish cast. As one of the best-known Swedish actors in the states, (he’s appeared in Good Will Hunting, Mama Mia!, and Pirates Of The Caribbean) it’s somewhat inevitable that Skarsgard has been offered a role in the film. (See also: Max Von Sydow). That’s not to say that Skarsgard wouldn’t be good for the part; discussing any particulars would be a spoiler, but it’s fair to say that he's up to the task of portraying Vanger. Now I’m just hoping that Fincher can wrangle his son, True Blood hunk Alexander Skarsgard, into appearing as well.

According to Skarsgard, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo should start filming by September, partially in Sweden and partially in the States. The film will be released in December, 2011.
