This must be the year of the toon.
An incredible 14 (count 'em!) animated films will fight for the chance to land one of three Oscar berths in the Best Animated Feature category.
Of course, if you take into account the
Wall-E factor, it’s more like 13 films fighting for two spots.
Wall-E, one of the best-reviewed and highest-grossing movies of 2008, is widely seen as a shoo-in nominee -- if not winner. But less clear is which among the remaining, unlucky 13 will be nominated alongside the Pixar pic.
Some of the better-known contenders include
Horton Hears a Who!,
Igor,
Kung Fu Panda, the recently released
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, and the soon-to-be-released
Bolt and
Delgo.
Horton and
Panda might be the safest bets to land the remaining Oscar nods, but
Bolt can’t be ruled out, because, well, it’s got talking dogs!
Academy Award nominations will announced on Jan. 22, 2009, with the ceremony to take place a month later, on Feb. 22.
