Next Friday marks the arrival of 2012, the latest apocalyptic epic from “disaster porn” king Roland Emmerich. Inspired by the Mayan calendar, which some believe forecasts the planet’s violent demise in December of 2012, the man behind Godzilla and The Day After Tomorrow has prepared a feast of destruction the likes of which has never been seen on the big screen. No one escapes Emmerich’s creative wrath in 2012.
Well, almost no one.
Watching the film, it occurred to us that while 2012 vividly depicts the obliteration of such sacred Christian monuments as St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil, references to any Islamic landmarks were curiously omitted from the on-screen carnage. Emmerich, it seems, is not an equal-opportunity blasphemer.
How did the Islamic faith manage to so conspicuously avoid annihilation in 2012? We posed the question to Emmerich during a recent interview:
