A 'Scary' Success
HOLLYWOOD - Who would have thought the lowbrow, gross-out humor of "Scary Movie" would be a sign of social progress? Yet, the teen-horror spoof, which just cracked the $100 million mark at the box office Thursday, will soon become the highest-grossing movie ever by a black director.
This weekend, the scatalogically minded comedy helmed by Keenen Ivory Wayans will eclipse the $101.3 million gross set by "Stir Crazy," directed by Sidney Poitier, in 1980.
It's already surpassed "Boomerang," directed by Reginald Hudlin, which made $70.1 mil, and "Waiting to Exhale," directed by Forest Whitaker, which made $67 mil.
