J.J. Abrams Gets the Job of Reviving ‘Star Trek’

J.J. Abrams
HOLLYWOOD - The man who Tom Cruise handpicked to direct him in Mission: Impossible 3 has been selected to breathe new life into the Star Trek franchise.

Filmmaker J.J. Abrams will produce and direct the 11th Star Trek movie, which has a release date set for 2008.

According to a statement from Paramount Pictures, the new Star Trek film will center on the early days of the franchise's most beloved characters, Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock.

Paramount bosses are keen to revive the flagging franchise after the 10th film, Star Trek: Nemesis, flopped at the box office in December 2002.
