The Braveheart star was picked by students in his home town to take on the role, which will involve representing pupils' interests at the institution's governing body, the university court.
The 63 year old will be formally installed as rector in a ceremony this spring (10). Cox follows in the footsteps of late actor Sir Peter Ustinov, who held the position in the late 1970s.
