Adele Opens Up About Her Career-Threatening Vocal Surgery

adeleAdele's voice became a global sensation in 2011. As soon as that girl opens her mouth, the whole world can't help but stop and listen. So when reports hit the web of mandatory throat surgery, many grew worried about how it would affect her career. But the British songstress plans to come back stronger than ever and is even scheduled to make her return to the stage at this Sunday's Grammy Awards. On top of that, Adele recently took the time to have her first post-surgery interview with 60 Mintues, where she chatted with Anderson Cooper and spoke out (emphasis on spoke) about the day her voice simply "went" out.

Adele described the experience, saying, "It felt like someone put a curtain over my throat. It felt like something popped in my throat." After meeting with medical professionals, she then learned she had a polyp on her vocal chord that had hemorrhaged. She explained, "I had laser surgery. [They] put lasers down your throat, cut off the polyp, and kind of laser your hemorrhage back together and fix it." Yikes, sounds painful.

Following the procedure, the 23-year-old singer was forced to write messages to people on notepads as a way to communicate with others; this was difficult since she says she's the kind of person who loves to talk. But don't worry, she found ways to make the experience a little more fun. Adele confessed, "I had an application on my phone that you type the words into it and then it speaks it," adding, "But the great thing is I love to swear. Most of [the apps] you can't swear on, but I found this one app where you can swear, so I'm still really getting my point across." Technology at its best right there.
