Allison Janney (Juno) has become to go-to “cool mom” for indie films these days. The actress will join Chris Colfer’s new comedy Struck by Lightning, as the Glee star’s mother. Lightning is set to be directed by Brian Dannelly, of the surprisingly sharp teen comedy Saved!, with a script from Colfer himself.
According to Variety, the “coming-of age-comedy” opens when Colfer’s character is killed by a bolt of lightning. The rest of the film is spent in flashback, chronicling his efforts to force and bribe his classmates into contributing to his literary magazine. No idea yet if they’re going to work a gratuitous singing scene into the film, but I wouldn’t be surprised. The project will begin shooting during Glee’s summer hiatus.
Chris Colfer has ended up with a busy schedule: he’s making his big-screen debut in Lightning, he scripted a pilot for the Disney Channel based on the kid’s book The Little Leftover Witch, and he has two children’s books of his own due out next summer. Not to mention the fact that he’s starring in one of the most-watched shows on television. I can’t believe that we’re the same age, that kid is making me look bad.
Janney will next appear in Tate Taylor’s adaptation of The Help. Struck By Lightning is due to be released in 2012.
