HOLLYWOOD - Grieving mother Anna Nicole Smith had no idea her son was taking the medication which claimed his life earlier this month, pathologist Cyril Wecht has revealed.
Daniel, 20, was found dead in his mother's hospital room three days after she gave birth to her baby daughter Dannilynn.
Toxicology tests suggested his death was caused by a lethal intake of methadone and antidepressants Zoloft and Lexapro, which combined to cause a lethal cardiac arrhythmia. Only the antidepressant Lexapro had been prescribed to Daniel by a doctor.
However, Wecht, who was asked by the former model to carry out an autopsy on her son's body, insists Anna Nicole had no knowledge of his drug-taking.
He says, "This is one of the mysteries remaining in this case--why he was taking methadone. It could have been as a painkiller. It is a legitimate drug for that use.
"His family is shocked. I am told that Mrs. Smith was completely in the dark about Daniel taking it."
Anna Nicole reportedly tied the knot with Howard K. Stern, the alleged father of her new baby, yesterday, but neither party has confirmed the story.
Anna Nicole's Pathologist Points Finger of Blame at Daniel's Doctors
The celebrated pathologist who Anna Nicole Smith hired to conduct a second autopsy on her tragic son Daniel's body has blasted the medic who prescribed the 20-year-old his killer cocktail of antidepressants and painkillers.
Dr. Cyril Wecht is convinced Daniel's Sept. 10 death was caused by a lethal intake of methadone, Zoloft and Lexapro, which combined to cause a lethal cardiac arrhythmia.
And now Wecht is pointing the finger of blame at the doctor or doctors who prescribed the pills to Smith, insisting that although they're all legal drugs, they shouldn't be taken together.
Speaking to CNN newsman Larry King on Wednesday night, Wecht fumed, "You'd have to be totally negligent to prescribe all three drugs. No way.
"I would recommend anybody not to take even two drugs that work in this fashion... I'm sure that somebody failed to explain this to Daniel."
Wecht also agrees with Anna Nicole's longtime attorney and friend, Howard K. Stern, over his admission he should have acted when Daniel told him he felt really tired.
Stern was with the actress/model when she discovered her son's body slumped in a chair in her hospital bedroom--three days after she gave birth to her baby daughter Dannilynn.
Also speaking to King, Stern said, "At one point Daniel said to me, 'How come I'm so tired?' and, in hindsight, I wish I had seen that as some sort of signal."
Wecht reveals this was a clear sign that something was wrong: "His complaints of being tired, while... not at all strange for someone who has just flown cross-country from L.A. to Miami and then to Nassau... this fits in.
"It's a restlessness, it's a drowsiness and it is associated with these kind of drugs."
