The biggest story of this year is Avatar's continued success through it's theatrical exhibition and into the home entertainment market, where it has sold almost 20 million units on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in three weeks. Talking to The Associated Press about 3D technology's place in mainstream media in the coming years, Academy Award winner James Cameron let loose a bit of details on the sequel to his magnum opus.

Cameron stated that it take about three years to produce a follow up to the most successful film of all time, about 18 months less than it took to make the first. He continued by saying the release date for the follow-up will be announced in a few months by 20th Century Fox.

We all knew that we'd be returning to Pandora in the coming years, but I'm more excited to see Cameron continue his career with something new, like his proposed Battle Angel: Alita adaptation. Though it's not original like the directors own Terminator or The Abyss, it's still something that we haven't seen on film yet and I don't want him to get complacent with his new franchise like some other entertainers have been with theirs over the last 30 years (cough, cough, George Lucas). Still, I'll be looking forward to getting back on that banshee and flying through the Hallelujah mountains in glorious, immersive 3D once again. Bring it on!
