Awards Mania, Part II: 'Milk,' 'Wall-E,' More!

Wall-E Movie Stills
New York critics loves them some warm Milk, while the L.A. critics love a robot named Wall-E, Variety reports.

The New York Film Critics Circle chose Gus Van Sant’s Harvey Milk biopic as their No. 1, while handing the best actor trophy to its star Sean Penn. They gave upbeat Happy-Go-Lucky star Sally Hawkins the best actress prize.

The Big Apple folk also honored Milk’s Josh Brolin for his supporting actor performance, while Penelope Cruz won for her supporting actress turn in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Now, while the New York critics picked Wall-E as best animated film, the Los Angeles Film Critics Assn picked the delightful Pixar romp as best picture, marking the first time in the organization’s 33-year history that an animated film has taken the top prize. Good for them.

The late Heath Ledger drew the City of Angels group’s supporting actor nod for his villainous turn as the Joker in The Dark Knight, while Milk’s Penn took another award for best actor.

Happy-Go-Lucky’s Sally Hawkins and Vickys Cruz also each got their second prizes for best actress and supporting actress, respectively.

Oscar prognosticating wheels are spinning right now.
