SANTA MONICA - Matthew McConaughey, Mr. Box Office.
"U-571" Yes, it has come to pass that a mere four years after he was declared Hollywood's brightest new leading man, McConaughey, who went on to star in, um, "The Newton Boys" and, er, "edTV," is sorta living up to the hype. The bongo enthusiast's "U-571" reigned for a second consecutive weekend at the box office, with an estimated $12.3 million, according to estimates from Exhibitor Relations Co.
Of course, the competition wasn't exactly stellar -- unless you consider a B-list "Flintstones" prequel with Stephen Baldwin the stuff of "Citizen Kane." In any case, "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas" bowed in at No. 2 with $10.8 mil.
The rest of the Top 5 stacked up this way: "Frequency," the good-word-of-mouth thriller with Dennis Quaid and James Caviezel (No. 3); "Where the Heart Is," the teen pregnancy drama with Natalie Portman and Ashley Judd (No. 4); and, the two-week-old hoops flick "Love and Basketball" (No. 5).
