EXPANSIONS There was no activity on the expansion front this weekend.
WEEKEND COMPARISONS Key films -- those grossing more than $500,000 for the weekend -- took in approximately $124.79 million for three days. Valid comparisons to the comparable weekend last year aren't really possible because July Fourth fell on a Sunday last year and was part of a four-day weekend (July 2-5). Key films grossed $160.4 million for the four days last year.
The three-day gross for last year's four-day July Fourth weekend was approximately $125.5 million. Looking at that total, this year's July Fourth weekend is down by only a marginal 0.58 percent.
This weekend's key film gross was up about 23.93 percent from this year's previous weekend when key films grossed $100.69 million.
Last year, Warner Bros.' opening week of "
Wild Wild West
" was first with $36.43 million for four days and a six-day cume of $49.71 million at 3,342 theaters ($10,902 per theater); and Sony's second week of "
Big Daddy
" was second with $26.83 million at 3,121 theaters ($8,597 per theater). The top two films one year ago grossed $63.2 million for four days. This year, the top two films grossed an estimated $63.4 million for three days.
STUDIO MARKET SHARES Based on business by key films (those grossing $500,000 or more), last weekend's top six distributors were:
Warner Bros. was first with one film ("
The Perfect Storm
"), grossing an estimated $41.68 million or 33.4 percent of the market.
Sony Pictures Releasing (Columbia and TriStar) was second with one film ("
The Patriot
"), grossing an estimated $21.7 million or 17.4 percent of the market.
20th Century Fox was third with three films ("
Me, Myself & Irene
," "
Big Momma's House
" and "
Titan A.E.
"), grossing an estimated $18.6 million or 14.9 percent of the market.
DreamWorks was fourth with three films("
Chicken Run
," "
Gladiator
" and "
Road Trip
"), grossing an estimated $15.85 million or 12.7 percent of the market.
Paramount was fifth with two films ("Shaft" and "
Mission: Impossible 2
"), grossing an estimated $11.2 million or 9.0 percent of the market.
Buena Vista (Disney and Touchstone) was sixth with four films("Gone in 60 Seconds," "
Dinosaur
," "Fantasia 2000" and "
Shanghai Noon
"), grossing an estimated $7.8 million or 6.3 percent of the market.
