Kingsley scolds movie execs for playing it safe

HOLLYWOOD - Oscar-winning actor Ben Kingsley (Gandhi, Schindler's List) has chastised film executives for trying to mimic recent hits. Speaking at a film festival in Karlovy Vary, in the Czech Republic, Kingsley remarked. "Many producers are so lazy-minded that they believe that if people are buying cakes with cherries this week, then they are going to buy cakes with cherries next week. ... It doesn't work like that, so quality suffers and so does the focus of purpose. If you make a film because you believe there is a ready-made audience for it, then you make the film without any sense of urgency, which is crucial." He added: "The studios completely dishonor the intelligence of audiences.
