HOLLYWOOD - Tina Fey continues her hot streak. Her new comedy Baby Mama, co-starring her SNL chum Amy Poehler, opened in the top spot at the North American box office this weekend with $18.2 million.
In fact, comedies dominated the top half of the box office list. Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, the goofy stoner sequel, debuted in second place with $14.6 million, while Forgetting Sarah Marshall, held its own in fourth place with $11 million.
"Comedy is definitely king right now," Paul Dergarabedian, president of tracking firm Media By Numbers LLC, told The Associated Press "Audiences are definitely showing an interest in going to the movies and having a good time and having a laugh."
The other newcomer this weekend, the thriller Deception starring Hugh Jackman and Ewan McGregor, barely made the list, coming in 10th place with $2.2 million.
The top 12 movies took in $80.1 million, up 29.04 percent from the same weekend last year but down 3.25 percent from last weekend’s draw.
The top three openers the same weekend last year were: Disturbia, which stayed at No. 1 with $9 million in its third week; The Invisible, which opened in second place with $7.7 million; and Next, which opened in third place with $7.1 million.
