Box Office Analysis, Dec. 26: It’s Good to Be ‘King’

HOLLYWOOD - Director Peter Jackson’s epic King Kong claimed the throne for the second week in a row with $31.4 million at the North American box office this four-day Christmas weekend.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe held strong in second place with $30.3 million.

"It's a battle of the holiday blockbusters. It was very close for the No. 1 position," Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. told The Associated Press.

This Christmas weekend was jam-packed with new releases as well. Jim Carrey’s newest romp Fun with Dick and Jane opened in third place with $23.5 million, while Steve Martin’s Cheaper by the Dozen 2 debuted in fourth with $14.7 million.

Johnny Knoxville’s comedy The Ringer premiered in seventh place with $8.4 million, followed by Jennifer Aniston’s Rumor Has It with $7.4 million and the horror flick Wolf Creek with $5.9 million.

The Top 12 films grossed an estimated $101.7 million, down 14.17 percent from last year's draw of $118.5 million and down 16.89 percent from last weekend’s total of $122.4 million.

The Top Three films at the box office this time last year were: Universal’s PG-13 Meet the Fockers, which opened at No. 1 with $46.1 million in 3,518 theaters, averaging $13,110 per theater; Paramount Pictures’ PG-rated Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, which dropped to second place in its second week with $12.6 million in 3,623 theaters, averaging $3,481 per theater; and 20th Century Fox’s PG Fat Albert, which opened in third place with $10 million in 2,674 theaters, averaging $3,748 per theater.
