Box Office Analysis, June 19: 'Cars' Stays in the Lead

HOLLYWOOD - Disney-Pixar's animated comedy Cars continued to lead the pack for the second weekend in a row at the North American box office, taking in another $31.1 million.

Jack Black’s newest laffer Nacho Libre, in which he plays as a cook at a Mexican orphanage who takes up wrestling to buy better food for the kids, debuted in second place with $27.5 million, while the third Fast and the Furious installment Tokyo Drift opened in third with $24.1 million.

Speed co-stars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock reunited for the romantic drama The Lake House, which debut in the fourth spot with $13.7 million. And finally, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, the last new opener this weekend, came in sixth with $7.2 million.

The Top 12 pics this week grossed an estimated $139 million, down 5.42 percent from last weekend’s total of $147 million but up 7.34 percent from last year's draw of $129.5 million.

The Top Three films at the box office this time last year were: Warner Bros. Batman Begins, which opened at No. 1 with $48.7 million in 3,858 theaters, averaging $12,635 per theater; 20th Century Fox’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, which dropped to second place in its second week with $26 million in 3,451 theaters, averaging $7,545 per theaters; and DreamWorks’ Madagascar, which dropped to third place in its fourth week with $10.7 million in 3,533 theaters, averaging $3,039 per theaters (Click here to read last year's box office report).
