Box Office Analysis, March 6: ‘Madea' Wins Again

16 Blocks Movie Stills
HOLLYWOOD - Everyone’s still partyin’ over at Madea’s house. Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion stayed atop the North American box office for a second week in a row with, taking in a cool $13 million.

Madea's Family edged out the cop thriller 16 Blocks, starring Bruce Willis and Mos Def, which debuted at No. 2 with a tame $11.7 million.

This weekend's other new wide releases had mediocre showings. The sci-fi flick Ultraviolet, starring Milla Jovovich, opened in fourth place with a pale $9 million, while the tween mermaid tale Aquamarine came in fifth with a watered down $7.5 million. The star-studded comedy/concert film Dave Chappelle's Block Party debuted in seventh place with not so funny $6.5 million.

Overall, it was a lackluster weekend performance for Hollywood, where attention was focused on Sunday's Academy Awards.

"Not every weekend can be a blockbuster. This weekend definitely was not," Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations told The Associated Press.

The Top 12 films grossed an estimated $83.7 million, down 23.23 percent from last year's draw of $109.1 million and down 16.50 percent from last weekend’s total of $100.3 million.

The Top Three films at the box office this time last year were: Buena Vista’s PG-rated The Pacifier, which opened at No. 1 with $30.5 million in 3,131 theaters, averaging $9,758 per theaters; MGM’s Be Cool, which debuted in second place with $23.4 million in 2,805 theaters, averaging $8,360 per theater; Sony’s PG-13 Hitch, which fell to third in its fourth week of release with $12.1 million in 3,438 theaters, averaging $3,525 per theater.
