Box Office Analysis, Jan. 7: 'National Treasure' on Top for Third Week

National Treasure: Book of Secrets
HOLLYWOOD - Third time’s a charm. For the third week in a row, National Treasure: Book of Secrets continued to lead the pack at the North American box office with a $20.2 million gross over the weekend, followed by I Am Legend with $16.3 million.

The weekend's only new wide release--the fright flick One Missed Call, starring Edward Burns and Shannyn Sossamon--debuted in fifth place with $13.5 million.

The real star of the weekend was Juno, which features a star-making turn from Ellen Page as a whip-smart pregnant teen. It moved up to third place with $16.2 million, due to a theater expansion.

"It's the coolest little success story coming out of 2007," Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Media By Numbers told The Associated Press. "It's playing like a mini-blockbuster right now."

The Top 12 movies took in $123.8 million, up 18.55 percent from last year’s $104.4 million on the same weekend but down 26.53 percent from last weekend’s total of $168.6 million.

The Top Three films at the box office this time last year: Fox’s Night at the Museum, which stayed at No. 1 in its third week with $23.7 million in 3,730 theaters, averaging $6,366 per theater; Sony’s The Pursuit of Happyness, which stayed in second place in its fourth week with $12.8 million in 3,027 theaters, averaging $4,255 per theater; and Universal’s Children of Men, which moved up to third place in its third week of release with $10.1 million in 1,209 theaters, averaging $8,435 per theater (Click here to read last year's box office report).
