Box Office Analysis, Sept. 27: "Forgotten" Thrills!

The Forgotten
HOLLYWOOD - The Forgotten was remembered by moviegoers this weekend. The psycho-thriller starring Julianne Moore took in $22 million in its debut weekend, sending last week's box office champ, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, spiraling to No. 2 with $6.7 million.

The Bernie Mac baseball comedy Mr. 3000 came in third with $5 million, followed by the teen romantic comedy First Daughter, which debuted at No. 4 with a not-so-presidential $4 million. Resident Evil: Apocalypse rounded out the Top Five with $4 million, earning as much in its third week as the Katie Holmes starrer First Daughter.

The British zombie spoof Shaun of the Dead, which opened in only 607 theaters, raked in $3.3 million to place eighth overall.

"We're just going to let it sit and percolate for another week," Jack Foley, head of distribution for Focus Features, told The Associated Press Sunday. "Then we're going to expand further."

This weekend, the Top 12 films grossed an estimated $60 million, down 5.01 percent from last weekend's $63.1 million take and down 24.77 percent from last year's draw of $79.8 million.

The top three films at the box office this time last year were

Universal's PG-13 comedy The Rundown, which debuted at No. 1 with $18.5 million in 3,152 theaters, averaging $5,880 per theater; Buena Vista's PG-13 romantic comedy Under the Tuscan Sun, which opened in second with $9.7 million in 1,226 theaters, averaging $7,954 per theater; and Sony Pictures R-rated Underworld, which came in at No. 3 in its second week with $9.4 million in 2,928 theaters, averaging $3,217 per theater.
