Box Office Analysis, May 14: 'Spider-Man 3' Dips But Still Cleans Up

Spider-Man 3
HOLLYWOOD - Spider-Man 3 expectedly came in at No. 1 in its second week of release, but the numbers dropped considerably from its record-breaking grosses last weekend. The web-slinging superhero took in $60 million at the North American box office this weekend--a 60 percent drop off.

"After a record-breaking opening weekend, to me this is an appropriate second-weekend drop," Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers told The Associated Press. "Any studio would be happy to have a movie opening with $60 million, let alone a second weekend with $60 million."

With $242.1 million domestically in just 10 days, Spider-Man 3 continued to beat the box-office pace of its predecessors. After 10 days, 2002's Spider-Man had grossed $223 million, while 2004's Spider-Man 2 had taken in $225 million.

The weekend's other new movies had fair to poor openings: The zombie horror sequel 28 Weeks Later, a follow up to 28 Days Later, debuted in second place with $10 million, followed by Georgia Rule, starring Lindsay Lohan, Jane Fonda and Felicity Huffman, which opened in third place with $5.9 million. The comedy spoof Delta Farce, starring Larry the Cable Guy, premiered in fifth place with $3.5 million, while the rom com The Ex, starring Zach Braff and Amanda Peet, failed to make the Top 10, grossing only $1.4 million.

The top-12 movies took in $96.9 million, up 13.98 percent from last year’s total of $85 million but down 46.55 percent from last weekend’s total of $181.3 million. The Top Three films at the box office this time last year were: Paramount’s Mission: Impossible III, which stayed at No. 1 in its second week with $25 million in 4,059 theaters, averaging $6,161 per theater; Warner Bros. Poseidon, which opened in second place with $22.1 million in 3,555 theaters, averaging $6,232 per theater; and Sony’s R.V., which dropped to third place in its second week with $9.9 million in 3,536 theaters, averaging $2,814 per theater.
