HOLLYWOOD
- Sources have reported to Hollywood.com that they and other moviegoers have viewed
Mel Gibson
’s new movie
Apocalypto
after buying tickets to see different movies.
Such moviegoers appear reluctant to contribute to
Gibson
’s profiting off of his latest feature following his much-publicized drunk-driving arrest and subsequent anti-Semitic tirade aimed at the arresting officer, James Mee, this past summer.
Thus the effect could be twofold:
Apocalypto
’s box-office tallies to date are potentially understated, which would then mean the grosses of some of the movies in theaters at the same time might be overstated, depending upon which films such moviegoers paid to see prior to sneaking into
Apocalypto
.
On July 28,
Gibson
was arrested in Malibu, California, for drunk driving. During his arrest, he said, amongst other things, “F**king Jews. Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” He also later referred to a female officer on the scene as “sugar t**s.”
Apocalypto
,
Gibson
’s first film since his highly controversial 2004 blockbuster
The Passion of the Christ
, won its opening weekend (Dec. 8-10) at the box office after grossing $14.1 million. As of Monday, Dec. 18, its total earnings stood at $27.9 million
