Chris Rock's Funny Funeral

Chris Rock at the Los Angeles Premiere of 'Madagascar Escape 2 Africa'. Mann Village Theatre, Westwood, CA. 10-26-08
Heed this warning, Chris Rock! Remember Tom Hanks and his big flop, The Man With One Red Shoe? The remake of a very funny, small French Film called The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe?

Seems the big-smiled comic has joined the remake-the-foreign-indie club, He'll produce, co-write and star in a reworking of Frank Oz’s dark British comedy Death at a Funeral, which hit the States last year.

Rock, natch, plans to turn it into an all-black "urban" version, the Hollywood Reporter  says, centering -- as in the original -- on a funeral that spirals into a series of familial mishaps, including the usual misplaced cadavers, indecent exposure and revealed secrets. The British version starred Peter Dinklage, Rupert Graves and MI-5/Pride and Prejudice's Matthew MacFadyen.

And if the ingredients sound similar to those of a Tyler Perry melodramedy, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise: Perry’s urban movies have been consistent hits, while Rock’s big-screen brainchildren have misfired to a degree -- the most recent proof being 2007’s I Think I Love My Wife.
