Controversial Madonna video receives VH1's respect

HOLLYWOOD - Madonna's 1989 video for "Like A Prayer," which appalled a series of religious groups at the time, ranks 12 years alter as the second-greatest video, according to a list compiled by VH1. In the video, Madonna cavorts in front of burning crosses, suffering Jesus-like wounds on her hands, and kissing the saintly statue that turned into a black man. Mary Lambert, who directed the video, told Reuters that "we really weren't trying to create controversy" with the video, and was surprised with the response they received, which she thinks was rooted by racism and right-wing Christianity. Madonna logged six entries on VH1's "100 Greatest Videos Of All Time," the most of any artist in the countdown. Michael Jackson's "Thriller" topped VH1's list.
