HOLLYWOOD - Three employees at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department have been disciplined for violating police policy in relation to Mel Gibson's 2006 arrest for driving under the influence.
The Braveheart star, 51, was taken into custody on July 28, 2006 in Malibu, California, after he was caught speeding. He then famously proceeded to verbally abuse arresting officer James Mee with anti-Semitic remarks.
However, the employees involved have been found guilty by the Office of Independent Review for not following standard police procedure both during Gibson's arrest--when they are alleged to have removed documents from their official report--and when releasing him from custody.
A summary report sent to TMZ.com reads, "The Report also discussed the controversy as to whether Department officials attempted to censor the original arrest report in order to deflect attention from alleged inflammatory statements that he (Gibson) made."
L.A. County Sheriff spokesman Steve Whitmore adds that a number of deputies received "minor" discipline for giving Gibson special privileges upon his release, including giving him a lift to the car lot where his vehicle was being held without prior approval from a supervisor.
