'Dancing With the Stars' Julianne Hough Joins 'Rock of Ages' Adaptation

Hollywood.comTwo-time Dancing With the Stars champ Julianne Hough will be joining Tom Cruise for New Line's adaptation of the Broadway musical 'Rock of Ages,' after an audition that director Adam Shankman (Hairspray) called "surreal -- maybe the best I've ever seen."

It's another big role for the up-and-coming actress, who, after conquering both the music and dancing worlds, quickly went from an uncredited part in the first Harry Potter film to a starring role opposite Kenny Wormald as Ren McCormack in Paramount's upcoming remake of Footloose, releasing in October.

Hough will next play Sherrie, an aspiring actress from Kansas, in the film adaptation of the campy '80s rock opera (featuring the music of Journey, Joan Jett, and other '80s rock staples), which opened in Los Angeles in 2006 before coming to Broadway, where it received five Tony nominations.

'Rock of Ages' creator Chris D'Arienzo was on hand to script the adaptation with help from Tropic Thunder scribe Justin Theroux and Shankman, who will begin shooting the musical May 19 in Florida.
