Director Matt Reeves Talks 'Cloverfield 2,' Says J.J. Abrams Is Involved

Matt ReevesCloverfield 2 is happening. Err -- someday.

Total Film chatted with Matt Reeves, director of the first film as well as 2010's much under-appreciated Let Me In, and the filmmaker revealed a whole slew of news. Some that's good: a Coverfield-sequel is in the works. Some that's bad: no one knows when. And some that's just really, really exciting: J.J. Abrams is "very much involved."

"Well, you are going to see it -- we just don't know when [laughs]," he said. "…At the moment we are talking about the story quite a lot. Drew Goddard, who wrote the original, is going to pen the sequel and J.J. Abrams is very much involved…However, the three of us have been so busy that getting the right idea together has been taking a long time."

Since Cloverfield was a monster movie, Abrams involvement makes sense because the guy, you know, kinda knows how to do the whole epic battle thing (Star Trek, Lost, need I go on?). Plus, with him joining, Cloverfield 2 will inevitably get exactly the type of monster it missed in the first film: a giant fucking cloud of smoke that kills people -- plus, maybe some heavy breathing from Matthew Fox.
