Editor quits in wake of Harrison death story
HOLLYWOOD - The editor of a British entertainment news service has resigned following revelations that he may have doctored an interview with Beatles producer George Martin, in which Martin was quoted as saying that George Harrison "knows that he is going to die soon." According to the online Salon magazine, James Desborough of World Entertainment News Network (WENN) fabricated portions of the interview with Martin that had been conducted by one of the agency's reporters and later sold the tampered interview to the London newspaper, The Mail on Sunday. The newspaper, according to Friday's edition of Salon, further revamped it, repeating the fabricated quote and embellishing it: "He [Harrison] knows that he is going to die soon and he's accepting it perfectly happily." Martin has denied making the statement, and a transcript of the relevant part of the actual interview, included in the Salon report, contains no such remark.
